Laura and Lorcán's wedding in the Clayton Hotel Galway

03rd November 2016
A lot to write about for Laura & Lorcán's wedding!
Bizarrely, I knew Lorcán from many a moon ago, although my memories of him are that of a toddler waddling around Fox's pub a long long time ago. Although the pub has changed hands, and was renovated, Fox's pub will be synonymous for a large group of people...and in particular CIE workers from a generation ago.
It was my dad's local pub until Cyrill (Lorcán's dad) sold it and Michael McMahon forced to find a new local when it closed for this reason. I have many fond memories of the place......i used to go to the Victoria Snooker club around the corner on a Sunday morning while my dad would have his Sunday morning pint, and then head back to Foxs' for my lift home.....I'd usually have a game of darts and a coke first! Lorcán's Grandmother used to look after matters on occasion in the pub too, and I was delighted to see her looking well and active at the wedding only 104 years young.....she was still there when i was leaving after about half an hours music...some woman!
Laura's preparations took place in her home in Oranmore, a very welcoming spot on wedding morning. Ironically I was shooting another wedding in the Clayton Hotel the previous day and had bumped into Laura's parents Doreen and Ollie there...so we weren't quite strangers on wedding morning. The superb Caroline Coyne was looking after the make up for the girls, and always a pleasure crossing paths with my wife's first cousin....a team player who's good fun on wedding days! Laura's bridesmaids Claire, Rebecca, Sara and Ellie were in massive form, jovial and fun to be around and this always helps the bride immensely on wedding day.
One moment that stands out to me from the morning was when i was shooting some portraits of Laura in her bedroom when her brother Paul came in just before heading off to the church. It's plain to see that Laura and Paul are extremely close and it was nice moment that the two of them had before Paul made his way to the Garrison Church.
Wedding Cars Galway got Laura into the Garrison church on time...Paul (the driver as opposed to Laura's brother) is another good team player on wedding days!
Laura was punctual, but I did get to spend a few minutes with Lorcán and his groomsmen Ronan, Paul, Willie and Tommy....equally as jovial and in good spirits as the bridesmaids....omens were there for a good day!
The Garrison church is a lovely church....I took shelter in it on many occasions in my younger days while wither going to or coming home from Liam Mellows Pitch and Putt Club....love it's character, in particular when the flags are hanging!
Nicola McGuire was accompanied by Dave Mongan and provided the wonderful music. Nicola's a good friend and as good as you'll get with her voice...love listening to her and bumping into her at weddings.
After the ceremony, we used the gardens beside the church for some family portraits before making the journey top Fox' pub for some hydration as well as a nostalgic visit. After this, we made the journey to the Claddagh and a place I never was previously, Kitty's Cottage. Laura and Lorcán have a strong connection with the Claddagh area, and it was cool to get some images in this cottage which is in the heart of it.....and we also got the bonus picture with none other than the King of the Claddagh, his highness Mr Michael Lynskey!
Luckily, the rains that were present on wedding morning had stopped enabling us to get some outdoor images, as well as some shots on the Claddagh Quay with Old Galway in the background, and as soon as we were back in the cars and making our way to the Clayton Hotel, the heavens opened and it started to rain heavily.....always feel like I'm cheating when the weather works out for us as well as it did on Laura and Lorcán's day!
The Clayton Hotel is a wonderful wedding venue....not least because of it's super wedding co-coordinator Karina...a real team player that's as genuine as they come and goes above and beyond for couples...a class act!
The Weightless Astronauts provided the superb music that had the place hopping for the rest of the night...super band!
Thanks Laura and Lorcán for being an amazing couple to seal with...thoroughly enjoyed your wedding day and working with the top class people that you had looking after you on your day!
